Luxury Golf Resorts: The Wynn Las Vegas Golf Course is the only course located directly on the property of a major resort on the Las Vegas Strip. It originally was the Desert Inn Golf Club, which was part of the now-defunct Desert Inn hotel/casino. Acclaimed golf architect Lawrence Hughes designed the 18-hole course, which opened its fairways in 1952. It was the only course to have hosted tournaments of the Senior PGA, the LPGA, and the PGA all in the same year. In the 1960s, the Desert Inn links were a favorite of numerous celebrities. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop, and Peter Lawford, otherwise known as the Rat Pack, were regulars at the D.I. Golf Club. And then the "Wynn" blew in and raised the old course to new heights!
Tom Fazio and Steve Wynn redesigned the course in a big way. Over 800,000 cubic feet of earth were moved and shifted; 100,000 shrubs planted; and approximately 1,200 trees from the old course, which are more than 50 years old and as high as 60 feet, were moved and replanted. The elevation of the course was altered dramatically. It is now a par-70 course of 7,042 yards with five par-3 holes, ten par-4 holes, and three par-5 holes. There is a 37-foot waterfall at hole 18. Eleven of the 18 holes have water risks. The practice areas include not only a putting and chipping green, but also a full-swing area. It is a complete country club setting that is fully integrated into the resort. There are more than six miles of cart paths. It is just one of the many features that made this resort the Strip's only recipient of both the Mobil Five-Star Award and the AAA Five-Diamond Rating.
